The master bricklayer’s own home

The original plan was for Pia and Rolf to move from the disused farm outside Nibe and into the apartment in Nørresundby, when their son moved out. However, Rolf could not let go of the dream of building his own home, so the couple went searching for a plot with a forest and a lake. They did find one in Guldbæk, but it was sold before they could close the deal. But one evening, as Pia was searching for plots for sale, she found one close to the centre of Nibe with a view of the Limfjord. The next day, they bought the plot, and together with a local Nibe architect, the master bricklayer designed his own house with brick as a basic element and copper flashings and mouldings as architectural features.

The kitchen is on the top floor with the best view of the Limfjord. When Pia first saw the architect’s drawing and the location of the kitchen, she thought he had misunderstood everything. Pia had imagined that kitchen should be closest to the view of the fjord, but because there is an undeveloped plot in front of the house, the architect placed the kitchen-dining room and living room – and the large windows – so there will be a view of the Limfjord, regardless of what is built on the plot in front.

The couple had already had another kitchen designed, but paid a visit to uno form Aalborg. As soon as Pia and Rolf saw the bespoke Copenhagen oak kitchen, they knew it was exactly what they had been looking for. All design choices are natural materials as far as possible, and the oak is a continuous feature in the kitchen, combined with tall cabinets in matte black laminate, worktops in Belvedere granite and a brass Quooker. The coffee cabinet, hidden behind the pocket doors, was a design must for the couple, and Pia enjoys it every single day.

Next to the kitchen, there is a large pantry with oak floor-to-ceiling shelving as well as a guest toilet, also with oak bathroom furniture from the Copenhagen collection combined with a copper mixer tap and a Quartzite Dolce natural stone worktop. Throughout the house, Pia and Rolf have prioritised functional, timeless and lasting design solutions while adding distinctive colour bursts in the form of paintings by their favourite artist, Johnny Madsen.

At ground level, the house features a hall with access to the house’s wine cellar, two rooms, bathroom, master suite overlooking the Limfjord, and a utility room. In collaboration with Pia and Rolf, Anja Hagstrup from uno form Aalborg has designed all the interiors and created a theme with oak and natural stone as supporting design elements.

In both bathrooms, Copenhagen oak is combined with Quartzite Cielo natural stone worktops, copper mixer taps and rain showers.
