The architect-designed house in functionalist style with a green area, a heritage-listed burial mound and a wood in its backyard, lies in a cul-de-sac in a secluded residential area in Lyngby. Charlotte and Thomas live here with their three children, aged 17, 15 and 12.

The couple have built a home before, and after some years in Rødovre and a change of school, they began searching for a plot north of Copenhagen with a view. The old house from the early 1960s had been for sale for some time and had scared many buyers away, but the location overlooking Ermelundssletten was just what Charlotte and Thomas were looking for. So they bought the house in summer 2019 and began clearing the site.

From black high-gloss to bespoke oak kitchen

When Charlotte and Thomas built their former house in Rødovre, it was Usman Akhtar who designed their black HTH high-gloss kitchen. They kept in contact ever since, and the couple knew that Usman at uno form Lyngby, would be the one to help create their new kitchen also.

The new kitchen design drew on experience from the previous kitchen, an uncompromising approach to design and quality, and their enchantment with exclusive Calacatta Gold marble.

The large oak kitchen island has drawers on both sides, as the couple never used the seating beside the kitchen island in their previous kitchen. Its worktop is made from one of the most exclusive types of marble in the world, Calacatta Gold, quarried in the mountains of Carrara, Italy. The white marble has dramatic grey and gold veins. These have been accentuated by a brass mixer tap from Quooker.

The white back wall has built-in appliances from Gaggenau and an integrated wine cabinet. The practical and elegant pocket door unit provides easy access to the coffee station, blender and spices during the day, and quickly conceals the appliances when the doors are closed. The family’s robot vacuum cleaner is also discreetly housed in the plinth.

Local plan amended

Charlotte and Thomas would have liked to build a two-storey functionalist villa, but the local plan had been changed since the first houses were built in the area in the 1960s. The couple therefore had to find another approach jointly with the architect that preserved the view of the green areas and the wood.

The solution chosen was a high basement under the house, containing a utility room, activity room and storage room. A perfect complement to the 252 m2 on the ground floor, where functionality meets aesthetics, creating spaces the family loves to be in.

The family did not use the living room in the former house, and therefore it was important for Charlotte and Thomas to have the living room more integrated with the kitchen. Now it all comes together around the fireplace, which acts as a beautiful room divider.

Boutique hotel-style bathroom

From the main bedroom, Charlotte and Thomas have direct access to a bathroom that oozes extravagance and luxury. The couple have also chosen a custom-made oak solution from uno form here.

It features large, elegant Calacatta Gold marble tiles that beautifully present the honey-coloured veins. These are also accentuated by the vola mixer taps.

The couple can enjoy an undisturbed view through the large window from the freestanding bathtub, or watch TV from the bed, on a television that retracts into the floor when not in use.

From indoor spa to outdoor pool

Charlotte and Thomas had an indoor spa unit in their house in Rødovre. However, Charlotte found the noise level too high when relaxing after a long day at the company, and it was  therefore only used as a bathtub.

The couple still found the idea of an outdoor hot tub appealing for their new house, and therefore arranged a meeting with a supplier. The outdoor spa ended up becoming an elegant pool area instead, with genuine travertine tiles.
